Coping When Everything Seems to Be Going Wrong: A Guide to Finding Strength in Tough Times
We all go through periods when it feels like the universe is conspiring against us—when everything seems to be going wrong at once. Whether it’s job stress, relationship difficulties, financial struggles, or personal loss, these challenging times can leave us feeling overwhelmed, powerless, and even hopeless. However, it’s in these moments that resilience, self-compassion, and the right mindset become vital tools for coping.
Here are some strategies to help you navigate when life seems overwhelming:
Accept That It’s Okay to Struggle
First and foremost, give yourself permission to feel how you feel. When things fall apart, it’s natural to experience frustration, sadness, anxiety, or anger. Pushing those emotions aside or feeling guilty for not having it all together only adds to the burden. Acknowledge your emotions without judgment. Remember, struggling doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human.
Focus on What You Can Control
When everything feels chaotic, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s out of your hands. To regain a sense of calm, shift your focus to what you can control. This could be simple things like your daily routine, the way you respond to stress, or how you care for your physical and mental well-being. Even small actions, like taking a walk, journaling, or organising a task list, can create a sense of order in the chaos.
Break It Down Into Small Steps
Overwhelm often comes from seeing all of our problems as one big mountain to climb. Break things down into smaller, manageable steps. Instead of thinking, “I have to fix everything,” start with the next immediate step. What can you do today or this week to move forward? Setting tiny, achievable goals helps create momentum, which can lead to larger accomplishments over time.
Stay Present
It’s easy to spiral when your mind is constantly rehashing the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can be a powerful way to stay grounded. Engage in activities that bring you into the present moment—whether it’s meditating, deep breathing, or focusing on something you enjoy, like cooking or gardening. Being in the present helps reduce anxiety and gives you a break from the overwhelming “what-ifs.”
Reach Out for Support
In times of difficulty, we often retreat inward, feeling isolated in our struggles. But you don’t have to face hard times alone. Whether it’s talking to a close friend, family member, or seeking professional support, reaching out can make all the difference. A fresh perspective or simply the act of sharing can help lighten the emotional load. Support doesn’t always have to come from others either—self-care and self-compassion are just as important. Be kind to yourself as you would be to a friend in need.
Look for the Lessons
While it may sound cliché, difficult times often bring valuable lessons. Every challenge has the potential to teach us something about ourselves—our strength, resilience, and ability to adapt. Reflecting on the lessons in adversity can shift your mindset from “why is this happening to me?” to “what can I learn from this?” This shift can foster personal growth and even empower you as you navigate tough times.
Remember That This Too Shall Pass
When everything feels overwhelming, it can seem like it will last forever. But remember, life is full of cycles, and just as good times pass, so do the hard ones. Trust that better days are ahead, even if you can’t see them right now. Cultivating hope, no matter how small, helps keep you moving forward. It’s okay if progress is slow—the important thing is that you’re not giving up.
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude may seem counterintuitive when things are falling apart, but it’s a powerful tool for shifting your focus. Taking time to appreciate even the smallest things—a kind word, a sunny day, or simply getting through another day—can help redirect your energy from what’s going wrong to what’s still good in your life. Gratitude doesn’t negate your struggles, but it offers a counterbalance, reminding you that not everything is bad.
Reconnect With Your Purpose
During challenging times, it’s easy to lose sight of what matters most to you. Reconnecting with your purpose—whether it’s family, a passion, or a cause—can help anchor you. Ask yourself, “What gives me meaning? What do I care about deeply?” Even when life feels chaotic, your sense of purpose can serve as a guiding light, helping you stay focused on what truly matters.
Take Time to Rest
Sometimes, the best thing you can do when everything is going wrong is to step back and rest. Pushing through exhaustion, stress, and frustration will only drain you further. Take time to recharge—whether it’s through sleep, quiet time alone, or doing something that brings you joy. Resting doesn’t mean you’re giving up; it means you’re conserving your energy to come back stronger.
Finding Strength in the Storm
When everything seems to be going wrong, it’s normal to feel lost and overwhelmed. But remember that you are stronger and more resilient than you realise. These challenging moments don’t define you—they’re just chapters in your story. By focusing on what you can control, seeking support, practicing self-compassion, and staying present, you can weather the storm and emerge even stronger on the other side. Life’s difficulties are temporary, but the strength you build along the way will last a lifetime.
Mindfulness Guided Meditation
Step 1: Find a Comfortable Space
Sit or lie down in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling fully through your mouth.
Feel your body settle into the ground or chair. Allow yourself to relax and let go of tension.
Step 2: Focus on Your Breath
Begin by focusing on your breath. Notice the sensation of air entering through your nose, filling your lungs, and leaving your body.
If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath. You might count each inhale and exhale to help keep focus.
Breathe naturally, but with awareness, noticing the rhythm of your breathing.
Step 3: Acknowledge the Struggles Without Judgment
As thoughts, worries, or frustrations about what’s going wrong come up, don’t push them away. Instead, acknowledge them as they are.
Silently name what you’re feeling or thinking. For example, say to yourself, “This is frustration” or “This is fear.”
Accept these feelings without judging yourself. Remind yourself that it’s okay to feel this way.
Step 4: Ground Yourself in the Present Moment
Bring your attention back to the present by tuning into the sensations in your body. Notice how your feet feel against the floor, how your hands rest in your lap, or how your breath moves in and out.
Feel the connection to the earth or the surface beneath you, grounding yourself in the present moment.
Remind yourself that right now, in this moment, you are safe and can handle whatever comes next.
Step 5: Repeat a Calming Affirmation
Silently or out loud, repeat a calming affirmation like:
“I am capable of finding peace.”
“This moment is difficult, but it will pass.”
“I am doing my best.”
As you repeat these words, notice how they shift your energy. Let them anchor you in a place of calm.
Step 6: Visualise Letting Go
Imagine placing all of your worries, frustrations, and stress into a box or on a cloud. Visualise yourself letting them drift away, out of your control, but away from your mind.
As you watch them leave, feel a sense of lightness. You are not avoiding them, but letting go of the need to carry them right now.
Step 7: Close with Gratitude
Slowly begin to bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Feel the ground beneath you and take a few more deep breaths.
Before ending your practice, think of one thing—no matter how small—that you’re grateful for in this moment.
When you’re ready, open your eyes and bring that sense of gratitude and calm with you into the rest of your day.
After the meditation, jot down any thoughts, realisations, or emotions that came up during the practice.
This step-by-step guide is designed to help you find peace and balance when everything seems to be going wrong.
