Kindness embodies the precious qualities of being thoughtful, generous and friendly to others, to treat them with gentleness, empathy, warmth and concern when needed. Kindness may be seen as a trait of weakness, but this is far from the truth. In fact, kindness, denotes strength of character and an ability to set aside personal issues to focus on others. This takes strength and courage. In England we have just entered our third national lock down, kindness towards others and ourselves is vital at this time. Be gentle with yourself and others, we are all fighting our own battles and finding new ways of dealing with challenging circumstances.
There are many ways to practice kindness. Be open to others in need, and if you are struggling don’t keep it to yourself. I noticed during the first locked down a wonderful sense of community spirit. However, by the second lock down this quickly waned. Now more than ever we need one other.
A kind word, a friendly wave, allowing someone to go ahead of you in a queue or being patient if they are struggling can all be acts of kindness. Giving honest compliments, sending an email to see how someone is doing, telling someone how special they are to you, Checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to make sure they have all they need, are all ways we can practice kindness. Every day, we are gifted many opportunities to practice kindness.
Don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Treat and nurture yourself as you would a cherished loved one, speak gently and kindly to yourself. Take an hour out of your day to read your favourite book, play music which uplifts you or reminds you of happier times or dance around the room and sing along. We have found this to be a great mood shifter for us!
