Consciously working with the energies of each season, especially for those who live in the middle of the city is an integral part of spiritual practice. It is easy to become cut off from the essential nurturing, grounding flow of energy that encourages us to release negativity, aids our mental and emotional well-being and rejuvenates our energy field.
An awareness of the ebb and flow of nature’s ever-changing energy as it moves through us, encourages us to plant seeds for the future, how to nurture them, when to harvest them and when to go within for moments of deep contemplation of what we need to release to continue our journey.
The energy vibe for Autumn is two-fold, it is one of harvesting and also of letting go. We can assess the wisdom and knowledge we have gained this year and how it has supported or hindered our Soul’s growth.
We then move on to separating the wheat from the chaff and looking at what we need to let go of, how we are being held back, and what keeps us entrenched in our comfort zone.
We can then rest in this sacred space of acceptance and allow the answers to gently rise up through our subconscious mind. All we have manifested is the result of our thoughts, feelings and actions so far. This isn’t about judgment or recriminations for things we should or shouldn’t have said or done. It is time to just BE, for resting in the moment and reconnecting with our higher self so we can make new choices.
This Autumn Meditation is perfect for focusing on what you need to let go of to create space for new growth. You are entering a quiet contemplative time to help you decide the next step of your journey.
Autumn Meditation
Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the ground; if you wish to do this outside make sure you can do so safely. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, slowly and deeply. You may like to follow the 4-4-4-4 box breathing technique.
Visualise yourself standing with your hand resting on a wooden gate that is set into an old stone wall.
Unlatch the gate and walk though into a huge beautiful garden displaying its most colourful Autumnal landscape of rich green, gold, orange, yellow and red. The air is crisp and the sky is bright blue, the sun shines warmly overhead.
With each step, you feel the soft crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet. Take a moment to soak in the beauty of this season.
As you walk, notice the tall trees around you. Picture their branches swaying gently in the breeze, shedding leaves like confetti. Each leaf carries a piece of summer, and as they fall, they are released into the earth. Imagine the leaves swirling around you, creating a soft, colourful carpet.
With each breath, inhale the fresh, earthy scent of autumn. Feel the connection to the earth beneath you. You are part of this cycle of change, just like the trees.
Now, find a peaceful spot in your mind—perhaps a clearing by a river. Visualise sitting on a cosy wooden bench, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin. Reflect on what this season means to you. What do you want to let go of as the year winds down? What new intentions do you want to set for the coming months?
Take a moment to think about these questions. Allow any thoughts or feelings to come and go, like leaves drifting on the wind.
Shift your focus to gratitude. Think of three things you are thankful for—big or small. Let these feelings of appreciation fill your heart. Imagine them radiating outwards, creating a warm glow around you.
Watch the fallen leaves drift by on the current of the water and feel yourself flow into a deeper meditative state.
As you glance up at the tree beside you, you notice how some leaves have already fallen into the water to journey onto their next destination, while others are still clinging onto their branches no matter how the breeze whispers to them that it is time to let go.
Even when we know we need to let go of something we still cling to it because it is familiar and makes us feel safe. We are aware of life changing around us, and even though our soul urges to go with the flow, we can sometimes feel as if we are hesitating with one foot in the water and the other on dry land.
As you focus on your breath, consider what you are holding tightly on to that no longer serves your highest good.
See this issue as a bright golden leaf on the tree beside you. Give thanks for the life it has lived, the beauty it has shared with the world, and its journey through the seasons. Now it is time to become part of the cycle of life, to nurture the land once more and rearrange its energies into a new life.
It is time for the leaf to leave the safety of the tree and become part of something new. Place one hand of your heart and other held out towards the leaf and send it sincere love and gratitude for the place it has had in your life and for the lessons you have learned from it. Even negative experiences hold important tools for self growth.
Take a deep breath and gently blow your intention to the leaf, reiterating that it is safe for it to let go and embrace its freedom. As you deeply exhale, feel the weight of the issue you have been carrying being released from you.
The leaf unfurls and gracefully spirals down into the water at your feet joining the others. The leaf is still very present; it is just changing state and making space for the tree to create new beginnings. Just as when you let go of the thing that is holding you back you are making space for something new to come into your life.
Stand up, and take a deep breath, stretch and fill your lungs with the crisp Autumnal air as you have so much more room to express yourself now.
When you are ready to return, walk through the gate in the wall again and latch it firmly behind you.
Begin to bring your awareness back to the present moment. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and take a deep breath in, feeling invigorated. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes, carrying the peace of this autumnal meditation with you.
Know that you can always return to this place whenever you have need.
Take a moment to journal or reflect on your experience if you’d like. What insights did you gain? How can you carry the essence of autumn into your daily life?
